Geocoding Workshop – Half Day (PM)

This core course will introduce participants to the basics of how geocoding works, and how to determine the quality of a registry’s geocoded data. Key geocoding concepts from the perspective of cancer registries will be covered along with an overview of Geocodio. The latter half of the course will focus on improving geocoding quality and best practice.


Course Objectives

·        Provide a foundational understanding of how geocoding works.

·        Describe the current context of geocoding in cancer registry operations, including best practices for cancer registries.

·        Present resources and discussion on how to improve the quality of geocoded data.

Content

Topics include how geocoding works, geocoding for central cancer registries (boundary files, NAACCR variables, metadata), and improving geocoding data quality as well as confidentiality issues and the public health context.
